Braintree Town face a tough test this weekend as Horsham FC visit Cressing Road, with The Iron looking to build on their first win of the season. The club's preparations have been overshadowed by a turbulent summer that saw them relegated and placed under a transfer embargo, a situation detailed in a report by the Sussex Express.

The off-season was a difficult one for Braintree Town. After suffering relegation from the National League last term, the club was then handed a transfer ban in May due to financial problems. This embargo severely hampered their ability to prepare a squad, a fact noted by Horsham manager Dominic Di Paola. "I think they were under that embargo for the Tonbridge game, so they didn’t have any players, but they’ve signed a few now," Di Paola said. The restriction was finally lifted on August 5, allowing the club to operate in the transfer market just days before the new campaign began.

Their start to life at step two has been mixed. They were thumped 4-0 at home by Tonbridge Angels on the opening day. However, they bounced back last weekend with a dramatic 3-2 victory over Chesham United, a result made more impressive as they played most of the match with ten men after an early red card. In midweek, they drew 1-1 with Ipswich Town's under-21s in the National League Cup, scoring a late equaliser before losing 4-3 on penalties. Their current league standing is 20th in the National League South, with three points from three games and a record of one win and two losses. They have scored four goals but conceded eight, leaving them with a negative goal difference of four.

Dominic Di Paola, the Horsham boss, is under no illusions about the challenge ahead. He expects Braintree Town to be strong opponents despite their early struggles. "I’ve heard the pitch is challenging so it’s going to be a tough one for us," he stated. Di Paola acknowledged that Braintree have come down from the league above and emphasised that "no one is bad in this league." His own side comes into the match after exerting a lot of energy in their past two games and operates with a very small squad where many players have featured for most of the minutes. Horsham hope to find some freshness and have no fresh injury worries for the trip.

One player who will not be involved is summer recruit Niall McManus. The midfielder, signed from Dorking Wanderers in June, has yet to make a competitive appearance for Horsham due to an ongoing injury. Supporters are told it will be a while before they see him in action. The club's current availability can be tracked on our dedicated injuries page.

The immediate focus for Braintree Town is securing a positive result against Horsham to climb away from the lower reaches of the table. With nine points already separating them from early leaders Dagenham & Redbridge, every match is important for building momentum. The win over Chesham showed they have fight, but consistency will be key. Fans can follow the team's progress and check upcoming fixtures on our fixtures page, while the full standings provide context for their league position. The club's aim will be to use this period of stability, post-embargo, to solidify their squad and push up the table.
