Braintree Town's difficult start to the National League South season continued with a 2-0 home loss to Farnborough. The defeat leaves The Iron 20th in the table with four points from five matches and a goal difference of minus six.

Braintree Town struggled after a competitive first half, according to the match report from the Colchester Gazette. Farnborough took control after the break, with Alex Whittle scoring a high-quality opener in the 53rd minute. Tyler Frost added a second goal 18 minutes later as the home defence faltered. The Gazette's analysis suggested Braintree's performance highlighted a gap in quality at this level. Defender Michael Olarewaju was a rare positive, but the team lacked organisation in midfield and penetration up front. The return of suspended striker Anisius Lewis for the next game was seen as potentially important.

In their previous match, Braintree Town fought back to claim a 3-3 draw away at Dover Athletic. Dover boss Jake Leberl told KentOnline his side never found their rhythm and credited Braintree's triple substitution for changing the game's momentum. Leberl said Braintree, with nothing to lose at 3-1 down, "just absolutely went for it." He also felt their late equaliser might have involved a foul, but acknowledged his team had chances to clear the danger. The point from that thrilling encounter is one of only four Braintree have collected this season.

Braintree Town have bolstered their squad with the loan signing of young Ipswich Town goalkeeper George Barrett. The EADT reported the 20-year-old has joined until January and has already made two appearances for the club. Barrett, who suffered a concussion earlier in the season, made his debut in the 3-3 draw at Dover. He then played in the subsequent loss to Farnborough. The shot-stopper adds depth to a squad that has conceded 13 goals in five league games. Fans can view the full squad list on our squad page.

The club's form reads LDLWL, leaving them in a precarious 20th place. They have scored seven goals but conceded 13, putting them 11 points behind early leaders Dagenham & Redbridge. The challenge of closing that gap is substantial. Manager Steve Pitts will be looking for immediate improvement to move away from the relegation zone. The next opportunity comes in their upcoming fixture, a trip to face 15th-placed Chelmsford City on December 26th.
